Location Details
Given the origins of the police in the US and the abuse that has been perpetrated by certain police officers toward persons of color, I want to provide context to the location chosen for the training. My husband, as a police officer (as well as an African American man) inspired me to become more involved in treating first responders with PTSD many years ago, including volunteering at a trauma retreat for first responders in 2019. When COVID hit the US in March of 2020 and we needed a larger space for Part II of the EMDR training to allow more distance between training participants, one of the clinicians in the training (a former first responder herself who had helped to organize the trauma retreat the year prior) offered the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) building as an option. Within that building, first responders regularly access individual therapy (including EMDR), group therapy, and neurofeedback, treatment that is invaluable for them and the communities they serve. Two months after holding my first training at the FOP, George Floyd was murdered. Despite and because of that horrific murder as well as other incidents of abuse, I continue to be committed to treating trauma for those who come from all walks of life. Since holding my first training at the FOP, I have requested that all fees that I pay for the use of the space are earmarked for trauma retreats (including EMDR therapy) so that first responders can continue to have access to the trauma treatment they need.
